Teri Hatcher opened up to PEOPLE about which of her characters she'd turn to in a crisis
Her many iconic roles include Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives, Lois Lane in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Paris Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies
Hatcher also reunited with two of her Desperate Housewives costars at the event
Teri Hatcher has played plenty of iconic characters. But which would be the best in a crisis?
Hatcher, 61, answered that question on the red carpet before opening night of The Balusters on Broadway at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York City on April 21.
Among her many roles, she's played everything from a Bond Girl (Paris Carver in 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies), an ace reporter (Lois Lane in the 90s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and a clumsy romantic (Susan Mayer in the 2000s series Desperate Housewives).
“Okay,” Hatcher said, considering her answer. “Well, definitely not Susan. She's sweet and all, but she's not my crisis go-to for sure.”
She then thought of another character she played: the “Other Mother” from 2008's Coraline. “I was actually going to say the Other Mother from Coraline, but she would probably also not be great because she would just be concerned with her own personal safety.”

That left one obvious answer. “Lois is a go-to. She's a go-to for everyone, I think.”
Hatcher played Lois opposite Dean Cain as Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman. Lois is the star reporter at The Daily Planet, and Clark falls for her, but Lois is in love with his alter ego, Superman. Lois eventually learned Superman and Clark were the same person at the end of season 2, and the couple married in season 4. The series ended with that season in June 1997.

On Tuesday night, Hatcher was on hand to support one of her Desperate Housewives costars, Ricardo Chavira, who was making his Broadway debut in The Balusters. Chavira, 54, appeared on the series as Carlos Solis, the husband of Eva Longoria's Gabrielle Solis.
Hatcher, Chavira and Mark Moses — who played Paul Young, the widower of Mary Alice — reunited during the after party and posed for a photo together.

In The Balusters, written by David Lindsay-Abaire, Chavira plays Isaac Rosario. The play tells the story of a passionate neighborhood that erupts into a war when a member of The Vernon Point Neighborhood Association suggests adding a stop sign to the corner of the area's prettiest block. The play also stars Anika Noni Rose, Marylouise Burke, Kayli Carter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Margaret Colin, Michael Esper, Maria-Christina Oliveras, Richard Thomas and Jeena Yi. The Balusters was commissioned by MTC through the Bank of America New Play Program.
Back in 2024, Hatcher opened up to PEOPLE about getting recognized for her work on Desperate Housewives when she was in Europe. The series, she said, “has a lot of French fans because they continue to play that show there.”
The ABC series, which ended in 2012 after eight seasons, has “crested generations,” she said, leading fans to recognize her on the island, “believe it or not, even though I'm almost, you know, 80.”
Her voice was the biggest giveaway, she said. “Sometimes people look because of my voice and then they go, ‘Oh my God,' ” she said. “It was really cute. Especially the young people because you would think, like, ‘Who cares?' You know, but they cared.”
Tickets to The Balusters are on sale now. The show runs until May 24.
